neither…eat about 10-15 minutes after exercise because your metabolism has to return to its normal state and wont be healthy for digesting food…

After exercise is the best time to eat. Especially if you want gains. And I don’t mean gaining fat. Your body needs protein to rebuild. Right after your workout is the most critical time. Protein synthesis occurs in muscles during workouts. The energy used at this time is most likely amino acids stored in your muscle from earlier. After so much exercise, the store depletes, and you must replenish it. Lets say you are running. Energy is burning mostly in your legs. If the store of amino acids is not replenished after running, your body will pull amino acids out of other unused muscles to replenish the store in your legs. This weakens your other muscles, while putting much strain on your body as well.

I would suggest buying a tub of whey protein powder. Protein bars are also available. You can get these at GNC or order online. There are many different flavors, but chocalate is usually the best. Some people think it is silly to use supplements like this because they feel it is for “bodybuilders” only. The truth is, no human can get everything they need from food alone. Whey protein is very simple for your body to break down and reaches your muscles the fastest.

Now for the question about metabolism. This is also the best time to eat to keep your metabolism going. Your blood is flowing, your body temperature is up, and your muscles are craving food. If you do not give your muscles food, your metabolism will drop back to its normal state and you will get no significance from this. Whey protein is known to keep your body’s metabolism in a fat burning state. If you give your muscles protein, they will keep craving more. At least to a certain extent, beware.

Eating/drinking simple carbs during exercise will keep your blood sugar up, and your metabolism. I would not suggest to eat anything that will be hard for your body to break down. I would suggest some kind of fruit juice or something with sugar in it. I am not saying to eat stuff high in sugar all day, though, only around the time of your workout. It is also important to keep your blood sugar up, so whey protein and nutrients can be delivered to your muscle. If your blood sugar is too low, your body naturally thinks it is being deprived of nutrients, so it will not store anything. Instead, it may even remove nutrients from muscle, like I said before, to use as energy where it needs it. I usually sip on a Gatorade during my workout to keep blood sugar levels up. After my workout, I eat a protein bar or a shake, along with a piece of fruit for the simple carbohydrates.
