Product Description
A year in the making, Sandra Ramacher has released Healing Foods: Cooking for Celiacs, Colitis, Crohns and IBS, a visually stunning and intelligently written cookbook. It is specifically designed to please and inspire all those who suffer from these debilitating intestinal diseases, as well as those who already live happier lives thanks to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (TM). This book strictly adheres to the diet prescribed by Elaine Gottschall in her revolutionary book Breaking The Vicious Cycle. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a strict grain-free, lactose-free, and sucrose-free dietary regimen intended for those suffering from Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The SCDiet has proven to be highly successful for many who suffer from various bowel disorders as well as the many related problems which actually stem from imbalances in the intestinal tract. The diet was first proposed by Dr. Sydney Haas and brought to public attention by Elaine Gottschall, a biochemist who researched the diet to help heal her daughter who was suffering from severe ulcerative colitis. Her book Breaking The Vicious Cycle has sold over 1 million copies and relieved suffering for countless thousands.

Very pleased to have a cookbook which is SCD friendly. I would have welcomed a book with greater abundance of information/techniques/ everyday recipes. If I were assigning a grade I would rate this book of a B- quality generally. The photographs were excellent.

I was looking for a recipe book for IBS that I could use with ingredients I have everyday in my kitchen

The recipes in this book are very complex and use ingredients that you don’t always commonly find in your kitchen.

Now, if this title immediately sets off alarms in your head, fear not. As someone who suffers only moderately with digestive intolerances to things like cheese, milk, or beans, I had already dismissed the recipes in this book as being boring or fussy to prepare. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the recipes in this book sound delicious, look fabulous (as we see from over two hundred photographs), and are lively and appetizing. Of course, if you don’t eat dairy or beans, you’ll have to sift through the recipes for those that are appropriate to your dietary needs.

Preparation and ingredients range from simple to delicate, from hamburgers to fruit flan, and each adheres to the guidelines of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, the “bible” of healthy eating for intestinal healing. If you are in search of a gluten free, sugar free, and lactose free dietary lifestyle, then this is the book for you. If you’re not, this is definitely worth adding to your culinary library because you may want to try some of these irresistible recipes for yourself anyway.
