Getting your child or children to eat healthy can be a monumental task of Herculean proportions. All the arguing, bickering and fighting over what they will or will not eat is worth the effort, because eating healthy leads to improved performance in school. Unfortunately that means unhealthy habits lead to poor performance.
So much depends on eating healthy yet we surrender to the desires of our children to eat poorly and eating poorly can lead to Type 2 diabetes, poor muscle development and serious childhood diseases. We need to be able to teach our children good eating habits from the time they are old enough to feed themselves or sit-up in a highchair.
When you follow the chain of events, starting with bad nutrition, it is easy to see how a child’s academic career can suffer. Bad nutrition leads to a weakened immune system, which leads to increased doctor visits and missed school days. Missing school makes it harder for students to maintain their grades or keep up with lessons. Even if a student can keep up, bad nutrition can interfere with their ability to accept and digest information. Too much sugar, for instance, can cause attention deficit disorder-like symptoms and chronic headaches, making learning nearly impossible.
These sort of problems typically start because children are left on his or her own to decide what to eat. If families eat separately they tend to make poor nutrition decisions. As a matter of fact families that eat together have less incidence of addictive behavior concerning drugs or alcohol. Food is meant to be enjoyed together.
A nutritious breakfast daily will provide your child with enough energy and vitamins to ward off serious illness and help them achieve high standards in school. This is why schools that offer breakfast have better overall scores and student participation.
Remember to have snacks like nuts, cheese, yogurt and fresh fruit available for your children instead of pre-packaged chips, cookies or ice cream.
Make sure your child’s school offers a healthy lunch or make them one yourself. All my kids took their lunch to school and ate healthy at home. They all now enjoy a healthy life as adults.
We also taught our children to cook starting with simple recipes and gave them lots of hugs and recognition for a job well done.
It’s easy to teach your children how to eat healthy. So start early so you to can follow the lazy mom’s healthy food track. Then sit back and enjoy the healthy lives they lead.
