I’m doing an assignment on healthy food in school canteens, i really need some arguments for and against canteens going “all healthy”.
Thanks.

I think most school food is pretty healthy already. If the healthy stuff tastes good what more can you do? I went to a school with some grerat school cooks….I’d choose their lasagne then apple crumble anyday over chips becasue it was so damn tasty!
If good food is prepared well and tastes good, then its only the kids fault if they want the bland fatty stuff.
Providing unhealthy food means that the school is supporting and profiting from making children unhealthy and obese. This is usually seen as wrong for a number of reasons; their individual health, moral and ethical reasons, the cost of health care and loss of productivity due to poor health and fitness etc. I personally think though that without choice it makes kids sneaky and try to hide things – very unhealthy to do with food. Also shouldn’t they be able to exercise self control and a balanced lifestyle? This is why I think that a small number of treats or just on certain days, like chips are on sale on wednesdays or something is the best approach.
1. Plain food i.e. meat, veg, fruits, cooked ” as they come ” are healthier and cheaper to prepare.
2. Kids are not stupid, they want to look good and be healthy, and eat a lot at the same time
3. Increase the use of oven time over frying time, no one will notice.
4. What is healthy food! .. all food in proportion is healthy.
5.Keep it simple. .make sure its not too “out there” for example.. aubergine or courgettes. Why not stuffed potatoes or pasta bake.
6. Ask the kids what they want.
i think it is a great idea…kids may start eating healthier, they might even the healthier foods more than the junk food, after rthey see how it affects them energy wise
